College Majors that Make for Great Journal Entries

Obviously, all majors are different when it comes to subject and course content and all majorsjournal and college majors have at least one thing about them that could be used for great writing, but there are just a few degree programs that are “special.” This is because they often require students to put themselves in new and different situations that are sometimes quite entertaining and worthy for remembrance.

For example, when I was in journalism school, I experienced things as a student reporter that were upsetting, startling, heartwarming, embarrassing and exciting. Every event molded me into who I am today and made me a stronger writer, journalist and person. When I look back on those days, I wish I would have written them down in a journal to remember them better and share them with my friends and family.

I believe there are a number of college majors that give students similar experiences like I had. These experiences deserve to be honored in a journal for future musings and personal growth. Below are four examples of majors that involve more than just classroom time and provide students with experiences that last a lifetime and make for interesting writing.

Journalism

Journalism students are often required to write for their college’s newspaper or produce radio or television newscasts for their school’s student-ran stations. This means that, on top of class work and extracurricular activities, they have to find time to meet story deadlines. This makes for a very crazy, and often disastrous, student schedule. Between finding credible sources to interview and getting credentials for press conferences and other events, the life of a student reporter can be quite dramatic. This is especially true for broadcast students who usually have to write, shoot and edit their news packages alone as “one man bands.”

Education

In the last year of the program, education students are required to take part in a student teacher internship. For many, this is their first exposure teaching in a real classroom. The first few weeks can be pretty treacherous, and many students have decided they no longer want to teach after working as a student teacher. This is the time when students really start to realize what it means to be a teacher and many revelations and lessons are learned that are great for sharing via blog.

Architecture

Architecture majors are rarely seen on campus. That’s because they are usually locked up in the student studio perfecting their end-of-the-semester projects. This might not seem like it would be entertaining, but there are a lot of different things that can happen when one is exposed to the same people in the studio day after day, night after night. Not to mention, the rigorous curriculum often takes a toll on most architecture students’ psyche, adding more drama to the mix.

Nursing

There is a lot about the human body that nursing students can share with the world, and a blog is a great platform to do just that. When you are studying to become a nurse, you will have to take part in clinicals where you will practice the profession in a real health care setting. Much like the education major, nursing students are often shocked by the things they encounter during clinicals. On top of that, they usually experience a lot of personal highs and lows that can be written into great stories.
