journal field tripWhen you were younger, field trip day at school was a cause for celebration. What kid didn’t love taking a break from everyday work, escaping the four walls of the classroom and learning in a hands-on way? The truth is, adults need this kind of rejuvenating break just as much as children.

The next free day you have, whether it’s a Saturday, a holiday or a mental health day from work, take yourself on a journal writing field trip to recapture this spirit of curiosity and adventure. Bring your journal, a pen and a flexible schedule.

No-Fuss Journaling Field Trips

1. Museum Musings

Research museums within an hour of where you live, whether you are near a big city with a thriving art scene or a small town with an interesting history. Spend an afternoon exploring the exhibits that interest you in the museum, then grab a cup of tea at a nearby café and use journaling to record your impressions. What subject matter or pieces did you find most fascinating? Why? What did you most enjoy about having time in the museum?

2. Theater Antics

Instead of watching TV on a Friday night, look at the local theater listings for a show that catches your attention. Sing along with the high school production of “The Sound of Music” or take a chance on a play you’ve never heard of. Bring a friend or partner along with you, and enjoy the entire spectacle – the costumes, lights, sets, music and acting. When you get home, write about the effect the show had on you. Did it make you feel exhilarated, thoughtful, nostalgic? How can you use inspiration from the theater in your journal writing?

3. Outdoor Adventures

Go outside and play! Plan a day exploring the natural world, whether you prefer hiking and camping or picnicking and bicycling. Breathe in the fresh air, appreciate the changing seasons and use nature as your journaling muse. Write a poem, a short story or a letter about your observations.

4. Local Highlights

Discover what unique features or events your hometown has to offer. Check out a local festival, a new restaurant or an up-and-coming neighborhood. Tell your journal why your city is a great place to live. What makes it quirky or comforting? What sets the people apart from other places?
