Every family has its own set of stories, traditions and values that make it unique. Your family shapes the way you view the world and the way you see yourself.

Examining your family history and culture more closely gives you greater insight into where you come from and where you’re going. Incorporate this exploration into your journal writing, and push yourself to go past just the facts and dig deeper into your feelings and impressions.

Start by reflecting on these questions:

  •          What makes your family different than others?
  •          What do you love about your family? What makes you proud?
  •          What do you dislike about your family? What causes you pain?
  •          Which people in your family are the keepers of stories and traditions?
  •          How would you describe your family in three words?

Journaling Prompts

Choose one of these journal writing prompts to strengthen your connection to your family history.

  1. Tell a family legend with as much flavor and emotion as you can. Think of a story you’ve heard many times over the years or a significant event you were present for.
  •          What happened?
  •          Who was involved?
  •          What was so memorable about it?
  •          What were the most vivid details?
  •          What repercussions did it have?
  •          How do you feel about it?
  1.  Make a list of questions you have for family members older than you who are still alive. What memories do they have that you want to capture? What experiences have they lived that you want to know more about? What advice would they give to you and other younger members of your family? Write down your questions in your journal, and set a time to talk to them on the phone or in person.
  1.  Free-write about questions you have about your family history. What are the gaps in your knowledge? What are the mysteries or secrets you want more information about?
  1.  Describe a family tradition that continues today. What are its origins? What is its significance? Why is it important to your family legacy? Do you carry it on? Why or why not?
  1.  Imagine you are trying to describe your family culture to a close friend who has never met any of your family members. What are your most important values? What are your best qualities? What are your biggest flaws? What are your quirks? Tell a story that illustrates your family culture perfectly.
