"There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost."~ Martha Graham

Dear Kay,

I'll bet you're surprised to hear from me! Thank your journaling coach, Mari. She suggested you'd be interested in my perspective on what you've been dumping onto my pages and those of my kinfolk for fourteen years as of next month. Our relationship has reached adolescence, surviving childhood tantrums: you ripping out and crumpling pages, more often in disgust at how you wrote them than because of what you wrote. But then you have left out the more gory details, haven't you? That's okay. I'm no fan of the tell-all genre, either.

Today I attempt to give you insights from my side of the pen. Don't worry. Although I've heard stuff you haven't even told your sister, and am aware of the facts you've chosen not to include, I won't tell. I'll discuss only the sense of your words, which indicate you've matured into a woman more confident of your place in life than ever before.

Do you realize how much of that you owe to this daily "scribbling" as you so dismissively refer to it? How it hurts me that you have no more respect for what we share here. You've been standing me up more and more often. I sit drinking coffee by myself, waiting for you to show up; and finally I leave and go about the business of preserving what you've deigned to reveal between my covers.

I apologize. We're not here to discuss my feelings, and I'm not complaining. Really, I'm not. It's my job, and the H. R. department was very clear about the duties when I hired on. It would be nice, though, if someone asked occasionally, "How are you today, Morning Pages?"

Still, I'm proud to be a voice for the Journals of the world, who rarely get a chance to speak. I'm proud, too, of the part I've played in your growth. And I will be here always, a friend in joy and sorrow, even at midnight if you need me.

XOXO,

M. P.
