To break through the noise and clutter in today’s hyper-competitive markets, your sales copy must be compelling, persuasive, and dynamic.
It needs to paint pictures, tell stories, and motivate prospects to buy your books, programs, and products.
Here are five essential sales writing secrets to help you make that happen!
1. Use Simple Headlines
The question I get asked more than any other in my 30+ years as a copywriter is:
“What’s the quickest way to improve my sales copy?”
My answer never changes:
“Improve your headlines.”
Headlines have two jobs:
- Grab attention immediately
- Pull readers into your body copy
And guess what? You don’t need clever, zippy, or sexy headlines to do that.
Simple headlines often work best.
Here are a four examples:
- How to Leverage Today’s Top 5 Online Wealth-Building Strategies
- 3 Secrets to Generating More Website Traffic Through YouTube
- New Report Reveals the 5 Hottest Email Marketing Trends
- Interested in the Easiest Way to Elevate Your Ad Spend ROI?
Each of these examples do a good job of implying there are several benefits to be found in the body copy below these headlines.
Yet, none of them are zippy, clever, or sexy.
Bottom line:
Simple headlines written in minutes can outperform “creative” ones you agonize over for hours.
2. Focus on the Transformation You Provide
Good sales copy starts by tapping into your prospect’s need, desire, or pain. But once you’ve done that, don’t just list features and benefits and call it a day.
Instead, paint a vivid picture of your prospect’s future after they’ve used your product, service, or book. Tell the story of their transformation. Make it detailed, emotional, and real.
Because when people can clearly see themselves living a better life because of what you offer, they’re far more likely to buy.
3. Fuel Your Copy With Emotion
One thing missing from a lot of robo-generated copy these days? Raw, human emotion.
I’m all for using AI to crank out first drafts. It’s efficient. It saves time.
But when it’s time to polish and publish? You’ve got to breathe real life into your copy.
Because bots can’t replicate the heartfelt emotion only a human with a heartbeat can inject. And when I say emotion, I mean real emotion:
- If you’re mad—write like it.
- If you’re heartbroken—let it show.
- If you want to make people laugh—dig deep and bring the yuks.
When you fuel your sales copy with authentic emotion, it hits harder, resonates deeper, and moves people to action.
4. Give Your Copy a Distinct Voice and Personality
A great way to inject emotion into your writing?
Make your copy unmistakably YOU. That could mean writing in a voice that’s:
- Fun and informal
- Soft and nurturing
- Edgy and direct
- Authoritative and strong
- Bold and optimistic
- Opinionated and provocative
- Academic and intelligent
- Elegant and refined
Or maybe something completely different.
The key is: Your copy needs to be “voicey.”
It must feel sincere, believable, and authentically you.
When you nail your unique voice, your audience will want to hear from you—and they’ll be far more motivated to buy from you.
5. Make Your Copy At-a-Glance Friendly
You never get a second chance to make a first impression—especially with sales copy.
Most people won’t read your copy at first. They’ll glance at it to decide if it looks fast and easy to consume. If it looks like a chore, they’re gone.
That’s why your copy must be “at-a-glance friendly.” Here are three simple steps you can take make it that way:
- Be generous with headlines and subheads
- Keep paragraphs short—two to three lines max
- Use bullet points to highlight key benefits and takeaways
Writing in an at-a-glance friendly style will get more eyeballs on your copy. And more eyeballs on your copy means more people saying “yes” to your offers.
There’s a lot more I could share about crafting high-impact sales copy.
But if you start by applying these five secrets, your writing will instantly gain the depth, texture, and emotional pop it needs to stand out in today’s competitive markets.
