For Your Personal Journal: Collecting Words of Wisdom

Every now and then, you come across a quote or a saying that resonates with you in a poignant way. It could be a line you hear in a song that reminds you of a past heartbreak or a quote you read in a book that makes you laugh out loud.

These moments are fleeting and easy to forget a few minutes later, so use your personal journal to record them and explore the deeper meaning behind each one.

Daily Inspiration in Your Personal Journal

1. Start by seeding your personal journal with passages that you already have a connection to. Flip through old books, journals and records to jog your memory, and write down poems, quotes, song lyrics, proverbs or any other words that have significance for you. If you remember where you first encountered them or any stories behind their importance, jot down notes as well.

2. Keep your eyes and ears open for tidbits that strike your fancy. One day, you might like the way a newspaper columnist uses a clever pun to demonstrate a point, and another you might overhear a piece of everyday wisdom while riding the bus to work. Write them down immediately, and save them for journal writing material later.

3. Use your list of quotes on days when you don’t know what to write about or need a burst of inspiration. Take one passage at a time and read it out loud. Think about what the words mean to you at first sight, then read them again and look for alternative or more complex interpretations. Write about these impressions and why you were drawn to this quote. What does it make you feel? How does it apply to your life?

4. Need help getting started? Here is a quote to get the creative juices flowing:

”Do not worry if you have built your castles in the air. They are where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.” - Henry David Thoreau
