Journal Therapy for Self-Discovery: One-Word New Year’s Resolutions

Journal therapy One Word resized 600Happy New Year! There is something exciting and optimistic about the beginning of a brand new year; who knows where we will go, what we will do or who we will meet. The possibilities are endless.

Every January, we have the chance to wipe the slate clean and look with renewed focus toward the goals, priorities or resolutions we think are most important. Using journal therapy throughout this process gives us motivation and support when we most need it.

How are you celebrating the new year? Are you setting traditional New Year’s resolutions or going a more unconventional route? Maybe you are taking the time to reflect on the last year  and write about lessons learned, or perhaps you're getting crafty and creating a vision collage as an artistic reminder of your goals.

I recently came across a simple but brilliant approach to New Year’s resolutions. Instead of writing a long to-do list of everything you want to achieve – lose weight, clear out clutter, learn Spanish, save money, volunteer more – carefully choose a word, just a single word, to focus on throughout the course of the year. Let it shape your thoughts, actions and decisions, and look to it for guidance when you need help finding your way.

Christine Kane, an entrepreneur and professional mentor, explained in a blog post  how she has been using this method for the last few years:

Several years ago, my friend Kathy and I decided that, instead of making resolutions, we would pick a word that would guide us throughout the year. It would be our touchstone. It would remind us of living our lives at the BE level…

Get quiet over the next few days. And pick a word for the year.

Just one word. That’s all.

Then, hold that word in your mind throughout the year, and let your word guide you to take action.

Journal Therapy Exercise: Pick Your Word

1. In your journal, do a little free-writing to hone in on what your word for the year should be. Try to open your thoughts and write down whatever comes to mind when you reflect on the new year. What do you hope to accomplish or learn? Who do you want to spend your time with? What do you want to change in a year’s time? What do you want to remain the same?

2. Reread what you wrote a day or two later. What common themes do you see? If you need to, do a quick brainstorm of words that resonate with you (for example: creativity, love, wealth or courage), then choose a word that best captures what is important to you in the coming year.

“Uniqueness” is my Word for 2012. I discovered through my journal therapy that I really, really want to celebrate my uniqueness and share it with the world!

What is your Word for the new year? Share it in the comments, and share your story of how you chose it.

AND...

You can find all kinds of journaling tools for self-discovery at JJ’S Journal Therapy store!

I love the idea of one word for the year. I chose mine between Christmas and New Year's. My word is Discover. I want to really discover who I am. I know I'm a Mom, a wife, a daughter, a sister, a friend; and all the other rolls I have. Over the years I've forgotten who I really am and I want to discover the person that lives deep in this body. So that's my word and my goal.

First of all, this is the ONLY daily newsletter/email/subscription I get on journaling--and I have been a journalkeeper for almost 30 years now. This is well done and inspired my journaling every single day. Thank you. This blog is life-changing and transforming.

This post is also a good one! I do not believe in New Year's Resolutions at all. Most of them are forgotten by the middle of February (if that long), after all. I do believe in life-goals, though. However, the idea of a one-year resolution changes things. It is something we can do all year long and keep after it easily enough. I can see how this can transform one's life in amazing ways. Thank you for this post.

My word for 2012 is TRUST. I have quite an issue in trusting others and in trusting my own judgement, and I think this year I will FOCUS on TRUST!

My son travels over one hundred miles, sometimes in the foulest weather, to spend my birthday, Christmas and New Year with me every year. I realised that if I am still living in my current situation when he comes next year it will feel like a momentous failure, to have spent an entire year without moving forward or achieving a single one of my life goals. Therefore my word is change. Change the town I live in for the place I want to be, change my financial position to facilitate that and so that I can have and do more of the things I want and want to achieve, change old limiting beliefs and habits which keep me stuck. I want nothing less than a 360 degree revolution in my life, it is long overdue.

Perseverance is my word, and I know if I don't persist at this writing thing through all kinds of storms and interruptions, no matter what, I will become a turnip, a blob, an unfulfilled old lady. I was born with this desire to write and persevere I will with a publishing goal in the near future.

My word is writing. I have stumbled upon this, because since I was 3 that's all I wanted to be was a writer. Well WRITING is rearing its head in my direction. I am journaling daily, doing a 27 day challenge, do a writers gratitude list, free writing, blogging (new to me), and journaling to write a novel. So I guess you see why my word is writing.

Thank You,

Angel

I have done this for years. Each January I am given a Word for the year. Each month I take another word and add it to the first word. By the end of the year I can look back and see what has been accoplished by focusing on the words.

My word for this January and 2012 is Mindful ~ pay attention.

Love this rewarding exercise...sue

Mari,

You are so right! We do get bogged down with too many goals and resolutions. This is an awesome idea. Thank you for such a terrific new year's post!

My word is going to be Food. I want to learn more about food - how it's grown, how it can heal us, how/where to buy it, how to cook it. I'm open to radical change on this topic and my journal is just the place to start inviting that change to come.

My word is BELIEVE!

I have gone through a major 3 year transition leaving the business world with my bossy hat and cape on in serach of my identity. It's been long and tough and sometimes painful, but I have come out at the other end on top of the world...I have discovered that I am an in fact an artist....I missed so many signposts along the way so my word for this year is to really get in touch with the artist in my shoes - to truly BELIEVE in my talent and abilities.

I'm excited!

Thanks for the great post.

Creatively yours,Rob

My word for the year is HEALTH. I have to get healthy as I have neglected myself for far too long. I'm enjoying the journey so far. Thank you for all that you do for us.

Hi, my word is:

TRANSFORMATION

It encompasses all the achievements I wish to make this year along with new permanent lifestyle changes I need in order to get all my 'want's satisfied.

I felt at the end of last year that 2012 was going to be a good year and I am just propelling myself in the ways I want to transform various parts of myself.

It's really good and this word sums up my New Years res's into one neat word!

I feel I'm in the same place as Rhiannon- CHANGE!
I've started the process, sometimes I have to force myself to follow though. It's so much easier not to, but I'm determined to do this for me.

I hear the focus, conviction and determination. Can't wait to check in with you in April and I do an updated blog article with all of you. WriteON!
