Ahhh, nothing is more relaxing than lying on a sunny beach with a good book, a cold beverage… and your trusty journal. If you are heading to the coast for vacation this summer, make sure you pack your personal journal and a favorite pen as well as your swimsuit and towel.

Between lazy naps and refreshing swims, get comfortable with one of these beach-friendly journaling ideas.

1.    Relaxed Reflections

Write a letter to a close friend and describe, in great detail, everything that is going on around you. Write about the kids jumping into the crashing waves on inflatable rafts, the seagulls squawking to each other on the pier and the smell of barbecue, seaweed and sunscreen in the air. Paint a picture with your words, and include the small details that make you smile or cringe.

2.    Drama Unfolding

Observe the people near you on the beach – families, couples, friends, solo travelers. Choose one person who intrigues you and write a short story in your personal journal about him or her. What made her decide to take that bus yesterday? What is he hiding from his wife? What occasion is she celebrating?

3.    Past & Present

Think back to beach vacations you have taken over the years. What did you like about these trips when you were a child, a teenager, a newlywed or a new retiree? Have you always loved to swim or build sand castles or lose yourself in a novel? How has your idea of fun changed over time? Free-write about your memories and recent experiences.

4.    Vacation To-Do List

Vacations can sometimes become more stressful than relaxing when you are juggling family dynamics or working with a packed travel itinerary. Stop holiday stress before it starts by making a fun-only to-do list. For example: sleep till 11, eat ice cream every day, go for a nature walk, play board games while eating pizza.
