Journaling Renew Vows resized 600If you are a journaler, you know firsthand the positive changes journal writing can create in your life. Journaling gives you a release for stress and tension, allows you to express your deepest feelings and can even give you relief from physical ailments and diseases. Your personal journal is always faithful, supportive and ready to listen to you... so why is it that you sometimes have trouble committing to this relationship?

Even the most devoted journalers struggle occasionally with making time to maintain their connection with journaling. You probably have some pretty good excuses  for why you can’t write today or this week or this month, but fight the temptation to use them by reaffirming all the reasons you love to journal.

Rekindle Your Relationship With Your Personal Journal

1. Start with a little inspiration. Read Ahava Shira’s guest blog post  about why she loves journaling. Reason #1: “I love the act of transcription, taking the thoughts, feelings, sensations, events and discoveries I experience moment to moment in my life and putting them down on the page.”

2. Think about your own list. What do you feel when you sit down with a pen in hand and a blank page in front of you? What emotions do you experience as you write and after you finish? What keeps bringing you back to journal writing, even after a long hiatus?

3. Write about how journaling plays a positive role in your life. This can be in the form of a list, a stream-of-consciousness essay, a poem or a love letter to your personal journal. Just be sincere and write whatever comes to mind. For example:

Dear Journal,

Thanks for always being there to listen to me when I’ve had a bad day. I love that I can gossip with you about my annoying boss and ask for your advice on my relationship problems. You are such a good listener, and I always feel like a weight has been lifted off my chest after I’ve finished writing…

4. Give your journal a little love and appreciation, and look back on this entry on those days when you don’t feel like writing!
