Journal Power: Listening to Spirit

Journal Power with CreateWriteNowWho were you before you were born and where are your ancestors now? How was the universe made and what keeps it spinning through space? What, as we ask so often, is the meaning of all this?

Do you use your journal to discover your beliefs around these questions?

Maybe you've been examining spirit all along. Maybe you are well-attuned spiritually, and your journal is where you wonder and ponder all the details of your faith.

Or maybe you're new to journaling about spirit. Many of us don’t usually pay any special attention to spirit. Or our forays into spiritual explorations are rare and short-lived.

So there’s certainly no one-size fits all when it comes to journal writing and spiritual considerations. But no matter where you fall on the spiritual spectrum, you’ll probably enjoy journaling from some of these prompts:

  1. Be quiet in a quiet place for a while and focus on your hearing. Just listen. Then write about what you heard. Was it the hum of an air conditioner, the noise of traffic outside, the chirp of birds? Notice any emotional reactions you have to the sounds and dig around a little, exploring them.
  1. Explore your concept of spirit by writing a detailed description of it as you imagine it. Then make a sketch or collage or other visual image of it.
  1. Ask spirit a question. Make it an important question, one you sincerely want to know the answer to, one that occupies a lot of your thought.
      • Write your question at the top of a fresh journal page.
      • Without pausing, begin to write your stream of consciousness, continuing as long as you wish.
      • Pause to re-read.
      • Now write a brief answer to your question (yes, you do have one, though it may be just a temporary answer).
      • Rinse and repeat as necessary.
  1. Use journaling for worship. Spirit is usually something we adore and want to celebrate. Your journal is a great place to voice your love and appreciation, to appreciate blessings and marvel at power. In the same way, when you write a poem or a song or make a picture or otherwise speak to spirit it is an act of worship.
  1. Carry a small notebook with you so you can keep track of whispers from spirit wherever you happen to be. You can’t expect revelations to pour out just because you’re writing in your journal. They come in bits and tips at random moments. Making note of them when they happen will help you learn to tune in to (i.e., not ignore, which we normally do) those whisperings and receive them in your heart.

I’d love to know your own suggestions for journaling about spirit. It’s a rich and honored tradition! Please comment here or contact me and tell me your thoughts.
