Julie's Post.jpgIf you are a writer, you know the importance of writing every day. But writing every day can be a challenge, especially if you are experiencing writer’s block or if you have run into an obstacle in your story. These rules and tools will help you to write more frequently and improve the quality of your writing.

 1. Really Know Your Character

If you are writing fiction, do not try to make your character say or do anything. Not one thing. Just make a very clear picture in your mind of who the character is. What is his background and motivation? What moves him to action? Once you really know who he is, you can just follow him throughout your story and write down the things you know he would say and do.

  1. Read Every Day

One of the best ways to keep yourself inspired to write is to read. Read things both in and out of your genre. Read newspapers and magazines. Read books and plays. Keep your mind active. The more you read, the more creativity you will develop.

  1. Write With Honesty

Write the story as it needs to be told. Don’t be too afraid to write some parts or to upset your reader. If a character needs to die, then allow them to die. If a character needs to feel pain or make a decision the reader will not like, don’t be too afraid to let them act how they need to act. Be brave, and trust that your readers are strong and smart enough to handle it.

  1. Find a Location That Inspires You

There is no rule that says that in order to write, you must stay home or go to a library. There is no rule that says to go to a coffee shop or listen to music. But there will be some place or set of circumstances that will transform you. There is some combination of factors that brings out your creativity and focus. Find out what that combination is, and stick with it.

  1. Start Every Day With A Writing Prompt

If you’re in a rut, a list of writing prompts can be just what you need to get out of it. You can avoid this altogether by starting your day with a prompt. When you write on a prompt, you are supposed to write constantly - even if you think what you are writing is stupid, and even if nobody else will never read it. Just write. It’s a wonderful way to start your day because it gets the creative juices flowing before you really start writing.

  1. Disconnect the Internet

If you are writing on an Internet enabled computer, turn off the wifi. If possible, write with a computer that doesn’t have Internet capabilities at all. You’ll be far more likely to keep writing and stay on task if you aren’t constantly getting distracted by email, social media, and the news.

  1. Break All The Rules

Every tip you will ever read (including the ones in this list) will work magically for some people and not at all for others. The most important thing to remember is that you need to find out what works for you. Choose the rules that channel your deepest cavern of creativity, and throw all the rest of them away.

Hopefully, these tips and tools will help you to write more frequently. As you get comfortable writing every day, you’ll notice that your writing improves and you feel more inclined to write in your free time. Happy writing!
